(The following is a modified version of a blog entry I made on the Western Heights website last week.  I felt sharing it with the rest of the church could help to stress some important points about spiritual perspectives. -MB)

A peculiar people, this is what the scriptures call us (Ex. 19:5 / Deut. 14:2 / Deut. 26:18 / Titus 2:14 / I Pet. 2:9) meaning that children of God are to look and act different from the worldly standards.  At the same time, we know that Godliness is more about what is on the inside than the outside.

So getting to the point, can something external like tattoos affect our salvation? Rarely will anything external be the bottom line on our salvation. Externally visible issues are more likely to be symptoms than the disease itself. Tattoos cannot condemn us any more than tracks on our arms from drug abuse condemn us. The problem is not the tracks, but the lifestyle that leads to those symptoms. If you have tracks on your arms from repeated use of needles because you are diabetic or have some other disease that requires constant injections, can those tracks condemn you? Of course not, because you have to consider why they are there.

In the same way, the problem is not the tattoos, but the lifestyle behind them. Are they there because you are living an immoral life? Then you've got bigger problems than the tattoos, and that is what can cost you your salvation. Do you have a tattoo of your wife's name because you love her, or of a cross because you love Jesus? Those reflect a Godly lifestyle, and that will never condemn you.

In other words, the disease that can cost you your salvation is sin, not tattoos, nor any other external appearance.  Sin can be very visible or completely hidden. Therefore, there are those that look very right on the outside and are very wrong inside, and those that look wrong on the outside (think John the Baptist), and are very right on the inside.

The other argument about tattoos is that we are knowingly causing damage to our physical body, which is God's temple and not ours to damage. While that is true, do we really wish to make that a salvation issue when we usually do more knowing damage to our bodies simply with our eating habits than we do with anything else? 

Our God looks at the heart first, last, and in-between. It is true that obedience is an essential component of Godliness, and that is why those whose heart is right with God make every effort to obey because they know this is part of “being in Christ”, and therefore part of grace.  Everything else is clutter that Satan places there to distract and confuse us humans. Let's not give him the satisfaction.

“Un Pueblo Peculiar”

(Lo siguiente es una versión modificada de una nota en el blog de el sitio cibernético de Las Alturas del Oeste que hice esta semana pasada.  Sentí que compartirlo con el resto de la iglesia podría hacer énfasis en ciertos puntos acerca de perspectivas espirituales. -MB)

Un pueblo peculiar, esto es lo que las escrituras nos llaman (Ex. 19:5 / Deut. 14:2 / Deut. 26:18 / Tito 2:14 / I Ped. 2:9) queriendo decir que los hijos de Dios debemos de vernos y actuar diferente a las normas mundanas.  A la vez, sabemos que el ser como Dios tiene más que ver con nuestro interior que nuestro exterior. 

Así es que llegando al grano, ¿algo externo como los tatuajes puede afectar nuestra salvación?   En raras ocasiones será algo externo la última palabra en nuestra salvación.  Cuestiones externamente visibles son más probablemente síntomas que la enfermedad.  Tatuajes no nos pueden condenar más que las pistas de agujas en los brazos por el abuso de drogas nos pueden condenar.  El problema no son las pistas, sino el estilo de vida que lleva a estos síntomas.  Si tienes pistas en los brazos por el uso repetido de agujas porque eres diabético o tienes alguna otra enfermedad que requiere inyecciones constantes, ¿pueden esas pistas condenarte?  Por supuesto que no, porque se tiene que considerar la razón por la cual están allí.

De la misma manera, el problema no son los tatuajes, sino el estilo de vida detrás de ellos.  ¿Están allí porque estás viviendo una vida de inmoralidad?  Entonces tienes problemas mucho más serios que los tatuajes, y eso es lo que puede costarte la salvación.  ¿Tienes un tatuaje de el nombre de tu esposa porque la amas, o de una cruz porque amas a Cristo?  Estos reflejan un estilo de vida piadoso, y esto nunca te condenará.

En otras palabras, la enfermedad que te puede costar la salvación es el pecado, no los tatuajes, ni ninguna otra apariencia exterior.  El pecado puede ser muy visible o completamente escondido.  Por lo tanto, hay aquellos que se ven muy bien por fuera y están muy mal por dentro, y aquellos que se ven mal por fuera (pensemos en Juan el Bautista), y están muy bien por dentro.

El otro argumento acerca de los tatuajes es que estamos conscientemente causándole daño a nuestro cuerpo físico, el cual es el templo de Dios y no nuestro para dañar.   Mientras que eso es verdad, ¿realmente queremos hacer de eso una cuestión de salvación cuando que tipicamente causamos más daño consciente a nuestros cuerpos simplemente con nuestros hábitos de comer que con cualquier otra cosa?

Nuestro Dios ve el corazón primero, último, y en medio.  Es cierto que la obediencia es un componente esencial de el ser como Dios, y pore so los que tienen su corazón bien con Dios hacen todo esfuerzo para obedecer porque ellos saben que esto es parte de “estar en Cristo”, y consecuentemente parte de la gracia. 

Todo lo demás es confusión que Satanás pone allí para distraer y confundirnos a nosotros los humanos.  No le demos la satisfacción.
